How to clean color fast wooden bird toys?

They say to clean all toys to disinfect, but when the colors bleed from the wooden toys, how am I supposed to clean them without getting them wet?

  1. The only way you can do that is to wash them in warm water. Since they go into your birds mouth, you really don't want to use a disinfectant on them. Just rinse them in warm, or hot water (i use boiling water and just pour it over them) and then let them air dry. The boiling water will kill any harmful bacteria, and it isn't going to leave harmful residue on the toys that ultimatly end up in yoru birds mouth.
  2. You can wash them. I hand wash mine in hot soapy water, keeping different colors separate, and then dry thoroughly. The colors fade a bit, but it's probably a good thing. The excess food coloring probably isn't the best for birds.
  3. Even if you use hot water to clean, with poultry you really run the risk of still having bacteria. I work for a bird breeder and we use a mild solution of bleach. After we clean the toys, we dip every thing in the bleach solution and then let it thoroughly air dry. We also use this method to clean perches, cages, and food and water dishes. Once dry, there is no danger of the bleach harming the birds. (as long as it was a mild solution.) We also clean the plastic tubs and bowls we keep babies in the same way. It was well researched with the bleach manufacturer.
