how to "surface clean" soft toys?
I have some cloth toys that can't go in the washer. They say to be surface cleaned. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean them, ie. what would be a safe cleaning method? If the toys go in the child's mouth, I don't want it to be poisonous (obviously)!

- Use Clorox disenfectant wipes. That's how we would clean all toys at the preschool I worked at.
- just throw them in the washer anyway. they may not look just like they did before but they will be clean. most of the time it doesnt hurt them. put them on gental cycle and they will be fine. believe me my kids loved those stuffed animals and I always washed them in the washer. they came out looking new! really just do it. Infact I cant think of one that it ruined to wash. somes hair may get matted but oh well they will be clean.
- You could use a damp sponge or cloth with a green all-purpose cleaner. I prefer the one from Trader Joe's, but diluted Simple Green would work well too. Then rinse with another clean damp cloth.
- I also threw mine in the washing machine. If you are concerned about it, put it in a pillow case and tie it shut. It's a little easier on the toy. After a while they don't look 'like new' but the kids love them anyway (and you know they are clean).
- Put them with a wet towel into a dryer and run on medium(or hot) for a while. The towel will come out dirty and the toys will be cleaner at the least.
- Sponge clean using a cloth dampened with a mix of hair shampoo and water. Wipe over with a wet cloth to "rinse". Do not allow toy to become too wet. Place in an open weave bag and peg out on clothesline to dry.
